Selecting a Medicare Advantage Plan

Many people approaching 65 are not aware of all the Medicare options available to them. These range from the original Medicare plan to a variety of Medicare Advantage plans. Your selection depends on finding the plan that best fits your individual needs. When evaluating a plan, here are some important things to consider.

Consider what is most important to you in a health plan.

For example, do you need to consider costs carefully? What are the plan’s rules for selecting doctors and facilities? What type of access to specialists do you need? Check limits on coverage, prescription benefits, if any, geographical restrictions, and any other issues of particular importance to your needs.

Make a list of all medications you are currently taking.

This will help you evaluate the drug coverage that a health plan may offer.

Make a list of the physicians you visit on a regular basis.

Remember, not all your physicians may participate in the same health plan, so it may be a good idea to list them in order of importance.

Consider any additional benefits that are offered.

These can vary greatly, so think about which conveniences best serve your lifestyle and healthcare needs.

Once you have gathered the information about your plan options, take time to carefully evaluate it. If you have specific questions about a plan, you can get answers by contacting a plan representative directly. By taking the time to learn about your Medicare options, you will be better prepared to make the choice that is right for you.
